Interview with Mr. McElhaney: 5th Grade Teacher

Hira S., Zipporah S., Hasna N., and Aisling C.

How long have you been teaching?

This is my eighth year teaching, but my first year at Pewaukee. Before coming to Pewaukee, I taught in Menasha, WI.

What made you decide to become a teacher?

One thing that made me decide to become a teacher is my 5th grade teacher, Mr. K. He made school fun, and I decided it would be cool to follow in his footsteps. Even more so, I always knew I wanted to help people somehow.  First, I started teaching Sunday School, and then in college, I took an education class that pushed me even more towards teaching.

What do you enjoy most about working with 5th-grade students?

I enjoy teaching 5th-grade students because they are at a cool and fun age where we can have fun and serious conversations to help them grow as learners and people.

What is one interesting fact about you that students might not know?

I know lots of online trends, memes, and slang words. I also enjoy playing video games on the Nintendo Switch. This helps me connect with the kids by bringing up Pokemon and Zelda.

In what ways will you demonstrate and encourage the Commit Graduate Competency in your professional career at Horizon?

One big thing I’m focused on is having students believe they can pursue anything and be advocates for themselves. I want them to be able to push through hard things so they can grow. I firmly believe they should be doing the heavy lifting; I’m just guiding them.
