Interview with Mrs. Johnson: Horizon Principal

Brayden V., Axel S., Eli S., Kason G., Shivam T., and Red B.

What inspired you to become a principal?

I have wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten. I wanted to be there because my teacher made school feel magical. This inspired me even more because I wanted to share this feeling with other generations of kids and make them like school just like I did. Once I became a teacher, I learned how much I loved working with kids and teachers to help everyone feel that same sense of belonging and love of learning that I felt in kindergarten. That is why I became a principal: to make school a magical and happy place.

What is your favorite part about being the leader of Horizon School?

My favorite part of Horizon School is how welcoming the students, families, and teachers have been. The Pewaukee community is special, and I feel a sense of Pirate Pride.

How do you stay connected with students, and how can students share their ideas with you?

I like to greet everyone in the morning, in the classroom, in the lunchroom, and at the end of the day and wish them a good night.

Students can share their ideas and thoughts anytime. They can schedule a “meeting” when they see me or even email me. I hope that by doing this, I can memorize everybody’s name in Horizon.

What is something special or unique about our school that you like?

I like how the campus is all together; connecting kids from different grades and schools is easy. Collaboration can accomplish so much.

What is one interesting fact about you that students might not know?

I like spending time snorkeling and swimming in the ocean in Hawaii. I have snorkeled with sharks. Most are harmless, like nurse sharks, but I accidentally snorkeled with a tiger shark! I also love sea turtles.

In what ways will you demonstrate and encourage the Contribute Graduate Competency in your professional career at Horizon?

I want all students to engage in a school-wide project.  We are currently working on a hammock garden at Horizon. All students can contribute to this project to create a place for students to read and relax.

Why is the school shaped like an E?

I think it is so people can get around easier. I also think it stands for Elementary.
