Interview with Ms. Anderson: 5th Grade Teacher

Lena C., Madison P., Harper M., Ava T., and Zara A.

How long have you been teaching?

I have been a teacher for five years, this being my fifth. Before teaching at Horizon, I was a teacher at Jefferson High School and went to college for Kinesiology. My first job was at Wisconsin Athletics.

What made you decide to become a teacher?

I became a teacher because I was inspired by both my Mom and my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Richards. My Mom inspired me because she has been teaching for 37 years and is still going strong. I also enjoyed attending school and learning as a kid, with Mrs. Richards being one of my favorite teachers.

What do you enjoy most about working with 5th-grade students?

I love feeling like I can talk to the students like they are adults. I also love every student's eagerness to learn, smiles, and contagious positive attitudes. I love their energy, which is always easy to vibe with.

What is one interesting fact about you that students might not know?

Some fun facts about me are that my sister and I won second place in state bowling in fifth grade. I love heavy metal, especially Metallica. Some other things I love are video games, watching the Milwaukee Bucks, and watching the Golden State Warriors.

In what ways will you demonstrate and encourage the Connect  Graduate Competency in your professional career at Horizon?

I have encouraged and demonstrated the Connect graduate competency by working with my fifth-grade team and other Horizon team members to support all students. I believe that it’s important to learn about and understand students and colleagues, whether I see them every day or once a month. I hope I have shown students how important it is to treat people with kindness and respect.
