In February, Mrs. Quick introduced the Stock Market Game to 40 eager 5th graders. Curious what happened next? Keep reading to find out how these young investors got a taste of the real world of finance!

What is The Stock Market Game?

Many teams of kids from grades 5-12 play the Stock Market Game. First, you get $100,000. You’re RICH! Sorry to break it to you, the money is in-game money, so you’re not rich. Second, invest in stocks that you want, and watch them grow! Or the opposite of that. Lastly, you sell the stocks when they have a high profit. The goal is to get the most money by the end of it.

How Does the  Stock Market Game Work?

The Stock Market Game is an online program that many students and schools use. First, you choose a team name. After that, you start researching what stocks you want to buy. You determine which stocks to buy depending on real events and their stock trajectory. Next, you and your team monitor your stocks, how they are doing money-wise, and how your portfolio is doing. If your stocks are dipping too far, you should wait one week, and then if they are still doing poorly, you should sell most of them but keep 1 or 2 of them. If your stocks are going up and still getting higher, you should sell immediately, before your stocks can go back down. Lastly, check your daily ranking so you can adjust if your stocks need to be changed.

Why is The Stock Market Game Important?

The Stock Market Game is an extracurricular activity that interests students in investing in the stock market and its workings. In The Stock Market Game, students learn how to invest in stocks and gain money properly. It might seem odd that we would be thinking about the stock market and the value of money in elementary school. Information is power, and we value the fact that Pewaukee wants us to try a variety of activities to help determine where our interests lie.  Before long, we will be graduating and need to prepare for the future.

Students from all over the region compete for first place; there are 147 teams. The Stock Market Game teaches kids how to invest in the stock market properly and the value of money. Most kids who participate think it is fun, but also a little stressful.
